Young Drivers; STOP the deaths!
Safety for under 25s drivers and their passengers
This will clearly divide opinion, depending on your age especially, but restricting under 25 year old drivers to only taking passengers who are 25 or over (plus exemptions, like their parents, partner, own children, people who work together, etc.), has been put forward as an idea to reduce accidents involving 25s and under.
Generally, most people do not like restrictions and, if you are under 25, this will clearly not be popular, but we would suggest that this should be be brought into law, as it has the potential to reduce the number of accidents, injuries and deaths to these drivers and their passengers, which is one of the worst groups of people as far as road accidents go.
Very often, these accidents end up killing one or more of their passengers, very often friends or other young people. We support any campaign to bring in such a law, provided it is intelligently thought through and, if implemented, suitably policed - i.e., properly and seriously, but
not
with a heavy hand!
Doing so would bring to an end young drivers - mostly boys and young men admittedly - showing off at the wheel to impress their mates or girl friend(s) and losing control due to a lack of experience and, let's face it, usually too much speed in an inappropriate place. Often, this is on country roads, where they think they can get away with it, but these are also the sorts of roads with lots of corners - and, crucially - lots of trees and ditches, which are death-traps if crashed into - especially trees! Male drivers between 17 and 24 are statistically for times more likely to be seriously injured or killed in a crash than older drivers!
NOW is our chance to stop this! Petition you local MP or sign up to a petition to get a law passed to prevent drivers under 25 (under 20 in the case of this campaign) from taking passengers - at least those who are in the same age group and are not co-workers on their way directly to or from work, or their partners, or their own children.
To do so, please go to:
Safer Driving Licensing for Newly Qualified 17-19 Year Olds, started by Crystal Owen, after the death of her son Harvey and three friends in a car crash in Wales. This should never happen to anyone, nor should parents get the life-crushing call or visit from the police, informing them that their child has been killed in this way.
